Interview: Marius Benson on Fire Safety and Risk Management in Compact Container Storage

Provider Perspective on Compact Container Storage Systems

Fully automated, extremely compact systems have become indispensable in modern warehouse logistics. They ensure 24/7 availability, uninterrupted delivery capability, and optimal space utilization through stackable containers. From your perspective as a manufacturer of such storage systems, what are the key features and challenges of these so-called compact container storage systems?

“When you talk about warehouses combined with stackable containers, you are probably referring to so-called cube systems, which are among the largest competitors in the automated intralogistics market. As a technology supplier for our ROCKET system, we offer the most efficient system in the shuttle technology sector in terms of storage density and compactness, with optimal space utilization, high throughput variance, scalability, and flexibility. With this versatility, we can compete effectively with such cube systems alongside our integration partners.

Due to our high storage density and compact design, very stringent fire protection requirements are placed on our system.

From the customer’s perspective, not only the initial investment costs for fire protection systems are important, but also the ongoing costs for maintenance and upkeep. Increasingly, these considerations are complemented by insurance-related questions and requirements, such as system reliability in the event of a fire, delivery assurance within the customer’s supply chain, and potential damages in case of incidents. We must remain flexible here as well to provide customers with a fully tailored system that meets their needs.

The respective industries, market sectors, and even country-specific regulations have a significant impact: an e-commerce customer may have very different fire protection requirements than a customer managing 24/7 production supply. National and international regulations can also vary significantly (for example, Germany vs. Slovakia, Bremen vs. Bavaria).”
